On Big Shoulders comprises Steve Dawson (vocals & guitar), Brian Wilkie (pedal steel & guitar), Aaron Smith (bass), and Gerald Dowd (drums). The band was originally assembled in the studio by executive producer Matt Brown for the Chicago-themed 2018 album On Big Shoulders. With GRAMMY-nominated producer Liam Davis and Scott Stevenson splitting duties on keyboard, the band now reconvenes onstage to perform a wide array of music linked to Chicago, and to explore its burgeoning musical friendship with legendary St. Louis singer Barbara Carr.
The band's repertoire includes "I'm Mississippi Bound" from Grand Ole Opry stars The Delmore Brothers (who recorded in Chicago in 1933), "Heavy Traffic Ahead" from Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys (who recorded in Chicago in 1946), "Long Tall Mama" from bluesman Big Bill Broonzy, "It's Just That Simple" from Wilco, and "Shake Your Head" from Barbara Carr's Chess Records output. By covering "Shake Your Head" on the album, On Big Shoulders befriended the St. Louis singer, who then journeyed up from St. Louis to Chicago to celebrate and sing for the On Big Shoulders record release concert at the Old Town School of Folk Music in December 2018. That night, Barbara joined the band to sing "Shake Your Head" and a scorching rendition of "Your Good Thing (Is About To End)." The resultant standing ovation showed everyone present that Barbara Carr is a force of nature, and that this all-star group of Chicago musicians is meant to be her band.
